FIBERGLASS INSULATION

 Fiberglass insulation typically needs to be replaced 15-20 years into it's life, as it can easily become dirty, wet, moldy, and ineffective if there's a roof leak or water damage of any kind. 

 Direct contact with fiberglass or breathing airborne dust containing fiberglass may irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. The symptoms of irritation are often nonspecific, temporary, and may include itching, coughing, or wheezing. Professional trained installation is always a great idea.

 Cellulose insulation usually lasts 20 to 30 years before it starts to degrade, and mineral wool also lasts decades as long as it is not damaged. Spray foam insulation is one of the longest-lasting. Many homeowners never have to replace it in their lifetime. 

Expert contractors that specialize in insulation advise that removing old fiberglass insulation is best before installing new insulation because of possible mildew, mold, or rodent excrement. 

 Attic insulation is an essential part of our homes, but dirty, old, poorly installed insulation can make us sick. While insulation may not be something you usually spend your time worrying about on a day-to-day basis, it's a worthwhile question to ask.

 Typical recommendations for exterior walls are R-13 to R-23, while R-30, R-38 and R-49 are common for ceilings and attic spaces.  See our R-Value map for further information.

 In terms of their ability to insulate a space, every form of fiberglass insulation – regardless of color – is functionally identical. However, be sure you are getting the appropriate R value for your region and use.

Dense pack fiberglass is now easily available from reliable contractors and carries a higher R value than cellulose. Cellulose is more environmentally friendly. Some assessments suggest cellulose does better at higher depths and is able to absorb moisture better. 

Insulation turns black when it comes into contact with airflow, causing dirt or dust to collect on the insulation and make it turn black. Or, if there's moisture and airflow, black mold can grow on and possibly eat away at your insulation. To solve your black insulation problem, you can clean or replace the insulation.
